effective-email-marketingEmail Marketing is very easy to execute but very difficult to exectute well.

The difficult part is building the list properly.  An email marketing program will only be successful if you get permission from people to send them email.

This quick video (60 seconds) gives an example of a use of email marketing for a law firm.

google-yellow-pagesThis is a quick but powerful post for those of us that want to bring in customers from our local geographic area.

If your tiny business is aimed at getting local customers – you will need to let Google (and the others) know that.

How do you let Google know that you are a local business? You start by building a Local Business Center here — think Yellow Pages except free.  Then build a local listing on Yahoo and Bing here and here.

After that, as time (and in some cases money) allows, build profiles in all of the following places:

Build Local Profiles On:

Best Of The Web – Local – http://local.botw.org/
Superpages – https://my.superpages.com/spweb/products/business-listing
City Search – https://selfenroll.citysearch.com/
Info USA – http://dbupdate.infousa.com/dbupdate/startupdate
Yellow Pages – http://www.yellowpages.com/sp/advertise/
Insider Pages – http://www.insiderpages.com/advertiser/find_business
Localeze – http://webapp.localeze.com/bizreg/add.aspx
Yelp – http://www.yelp.com/
AlikeList – http://www.alikelist.com/registration?

Building these profiles will assist in getting better search engine rankings for terms that have a geographic target affixed to them such as:

‘accountant dallas tx’

OR

‘art studio 63129′

content-marketing-expertThink about the formidable competitors in your industry.  What makes them formidable?

Most likely, it is because they are considered by many to be the foremost authority on whatever products or services they sell.  Whether it be shoes, art work or accounting services — we buy from those we believe are EXPERTS in their field.

How, then, can you establish your tiny business as an expert in your industry?

Chances are that you are already an expert in your field and if you are not, I am wondering why you chose to enter the market.  This post will discuss the ways in which you can make your expertise known to your market.

Establishing yourself as an expert in your field can be done, over time, through the use of a Content Marketing strategy.  Start engaging in the activities below on a consistent basis and watch your authority and your sales grow.

Write and Publish Articles

Text is still the king of all content creation and it is where all Content Marketing strategy should begin.  Not only is it the preferred content type by search engines, but text is also widely consumed by nearly every industry.

Text can take many forms, the most important of which should be in the form of written posts on your business blog.   You should be creating a consistent stream of valuable text posts on your blog.  Your business blog should be the hub of your Content Marketing strategy and should house all of your content including text articles.

Other forms of text content include:

  • White Papers
  • Tweets, Facebook Updates and other Social Media text
  • Guest Post articles for other blogs
  • Articles distributed through article directories like Ezinearticles.com
  • Press Releases

Seek Speaking Engagements

When you speak, you are perceived as an expert on the subject matter you are speaking about.  It is really that simple.  You should be looking for opportunities to get in front of an audience and teach them something about your industry.

When you do so, publish your Powerpoint through a service like Slide Share and embed the slide show on your blog along with some commentary and a video of the presentation.  Pick up a cheap and easy digital video camera like The Flip camera.  The video, slide show and text blog post you create gives your speaking engagement an infinite life span that will contribute to your perception as an expert.

Run a Podcast

Start a radio show.  No — i’m not kidding.  Start a radio show about the topics, trends, conferences, gossip, etc. in your industry.  Interview vendors, competitors, freelancers and other members of your vertical on your program.

If your industry would lend itself well to an audio podcast, you will find that this will be a major boon to your level of perceived expertise.

All you will need is a decent microphone (less than $100) — I use the Samson CO1U and it does just fine for a beginning podcaster.

Create Online Video

Video is hot, hot, hot.  Creating video around topics in your industry is a powerful method for increasing the perception of your expertise.

Creating video is not as difficult as it sounds — you can use the aforementioned Flip Camera or just a cheap web cam to shoot head-shot video.   I use the Rocketfish RF-WED2C and it is less than $30.  Most laptops and desktops sold today come with a web cam built in.

Upload your video to as many video sharing sites as you can using a service like Tube Mogul and then (of course) embed the video on your blog.

What about you?  How do you go about letting your market know that you are an expert in your field and you deserve their business?  Leave a comment!

Your marketing plan should change with it.

The traditional marketing plan has two main purposes:

Hmmm... which web host should I choose?

Hmmm... which web host should I choose?

If you just want the quick version of this — I have used and highly recommend either Bluehost or Hostgator hosting.

If you read this blog regularly (actually — if you read nearly any bloggers blog regularly) you know that WordPress is the most powerful blogging platform available.

You also know that in order to execute an effective Content Marketing strategy you will need to set up a blog and begin adding relevant, valuable and consistent content to your blog.

Setting up a WordPress blog is not difficult — in fact I have created step by step video on setting up a blog that will walk you through the process — it is painless.  In order to set up your own blog you will need web hosting.

What is Web Hosting?

Think of your web host as another computer somewhere else in the world that is housing the files for your website.  When someone types in your domain name (example:  russhenneberry.com) your files will be fetched from your web host and returned to the searchers Internet browser.

How To Pick A Web Host For A WordPress Blog

Be sure to verify that your web host has the following attributes before purchasing:

Linux/Apache

First things first, you will want to find a web host that provides LAMP servers.  This is a Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP server.  Since WordPress runs on PHP and MySQL you will need to ensure that this is the type of server space that you purchase.

Fantastico/Simple Scripts

Secondly, I would not even consider getting hosting that doesn’t include either Fantastico or Simple Scripts.  These two applications allow you to install your WordPress blog with a couple of clicks of a button — no technical stuff.

Add On Domains

If you have even the slightest inkling that you may eventually start another website, you should ensure that your web host allows “add-on domains.”  This means that you will be able to host multiple websites on the same hosting package while still retaining separate domains in the eyes of search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

My hosting providers of choice for a beginning blogger have been Bluehost and Hostgator.  Both provide all of the above and then some.  I have had good experiences with both customer support and product quality.

My Place Or Yours?

by Russ Henneberry

hot-dateContent Marketing (actually — marketing in general) is about getting people to engage with your business, brand, products and services.

Do you really care WHERE this engagement occurs?

Sure — I know that you would rather your target market engage with your business on your website.  This way you have more control over the experience — the design, the conversion behavior, etc.

Get over it.

The fact is that people are spending more and more time on social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.  According to Nielsen, we have spent over 13 billion minutes on Facebook alone this year — that’s billion with a “B.”

You have to get out there!  Bring your marketing message to the people.  Fish where the fish are.

Next time your market asks “My Place or Yours?” — respond cooly — “Whatever works for you.”

There are tens of thousands of TOOLS you can use to market your business on the Internet.  Here are just a handful that you may not have heard of:

This may be the most important plug-in (besides the life-saving Akismet spam blocker) that you install on your WordPress blog.

It will back up and email your WordPress database to you at a scheduled time each week.  If your database becomes corrupt, your site is deleted or is otherwise attacked by Internet gremlins you will be able to restore your site to the last back-up.

Here is how to do it.

1.  Log-In to your WordPress Admin Panel.

2.  Click on “Plug-Ins”  and then “Add New”

add-new-plug-in

3.  Type “WP-DB Backup” into the search bar.

4.  Find the “WP-DB Backup” plug-in and click “Install”

5.  Click on “Install Now”

6.  Click on “Activate Plug-in”

7.  Find the “WordPress Database Backup” Plugin in your list of Plug-Ins and Click on “Tools –> Backup’

8.  Set the timing of your back up — I do once a week. Add your email address to the “Scheduled Back-Up section and click on “Schedule Back-Up button”

Voila… your WordPress MySQL database will be emailed to you on the schedule that you specified in Step 8.

Take that Internet gremlins!

twitter-icons

This is super interesting.

I stumbled upon this while browsing through Twitter Search and looking at the tweets sent out about big brands like Jet Blue.

Much to my amazement, when I searched “jet blue”, I couldn’t find a single negative tweet about the company.  Nobody was aggravated by their customer service, no lost luggage complaints, no complaints about being price gouged by the airline.

This led me to investigate one of Jet Blue’s competitors — “american airlines.”  I compared the tweets about AA versus Jet Blue.

Here is the “key” to interpreting the results:

Here is what was being tweeted about Jet Blue

I have often used Jet Blue as a shining example of the use of Twitter — and this adds to the proof that proactive management of social media channels like Twitter pays off.

Now, let’s have a look at what is being said about  American Airlines.

You can draw your own conclusions… my feeling is that Jet Blue has done a much better job of cultivating relationships with people on social media channels.
