Can Google Predict the Next Swine Flu?

Google has been busy looking for correlations between the keywords we are searching online and the events that are unfolding off line.  A simple example correlation would be the increase in the number of people searching the keyword ‘barack obama’ as the 2008 election drew to a close.

A more complex and possibly more useful application lies in the area of flu pandemics and other global health threats.  Google Flu Trends is a project that claims that Google can predict flu outbreaks approximately 2 weeks before more traditional methods.
