The Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River over a period of 5+ million years (so they say.)
Drip, Drip, Drip.
The canyon, as with most things that are remarkable, has been built from repetitive work over a long period of time.
Although your tiny business does not need to be operating for millions of years to become something worth mentioning, there is no substitute for consistency and repetition in your marketing.
Here are some mistakes that I see tiny business owners making in their attempt to become GRAND businesses.
Giving Up Too Quickly
Consider the unrelenting Colorado River and the results of consistent energy. This may sound a bit “out there” but you must think of your internet marketing efforts in the same way.
You must persist.
Consistent work on your part WILL PAY OFF but the majority of business owners will have long since packed it in and opted for something easier (like a full time job) by the time you succeed.
A Lack of Focus
Consider the focus of the Colorado River and the results of repetitive and concentrated movement of the water in one direction. Marketing the same way to everyone doesn’t work well on the web.
The web is about being personal. The web is about niches. The web is about people, their problems, their needs.
Consider this in your internet marketing. Are you focused? Do you have a consistent message and do you have consistent processes for delivering that message? Too many of us are spending all of our time researching “The Next Big Thing” and not enough time concentrating on delivering focused content through a focused delivery mechanism.
You will certainly need to be investigating new technologies and marketing methods. If you don’t the Internet will pass you by. But you must be disciplined enough to maintain the focused processes that are work while exploring new opportunities.
Expecting Too Much Reward For Too Little Effort
The sum total of the amount of energy expended by the Colorado River to carve a one mile deep canyon over millions of years is staggering. Although it sounds strange to call it EFFORT, that’s exactly what it is. It has taken an incalculable amount of energy and effort to build the great canyon.
You should expect nothing different from your efforts as a tiny business owner. It will take effort and that effort will be rewarded. But you will get out exactly what you put in.
The Colorado River has slowly, imperceptibly carved out a majestic canyon — the building of your tiny business will not take the colossal amount of time, effort or focus that the Colorado River has expended (PHEW!) but there are certainly lessons to be learned from the Grand Canyon and its maker.
