Drip, Drip, Drip

by Russ Henneberry

grand-canyon-smallThe Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River over a period of 5+ million years (so they say.)

Drip, Drip, Drip.

The canyon, as with most things that are remarkable, has been built from repetitive work over a long period of time.

Although your tiny business does not need to be operating for millions of years to become something worth mentioning, there is no substitute for consistency and repetition in your marketing.

Here are some mistakes that I see tiny business owners making in their attempt to become GRAND businesses.

Giving Up Too Quickly

Consider the unrelenting Colorado River and the results of consistent energy.  This may sound a bit “out there” but you must think of your internet marketing efforts in the same way.

You must persist.

Consistent work on your part WILL PAY OFF but the majority of business owners will have long since packed it in and opted for something easier (like a full time job) by the time you succeed.

A Lack of Focus

Consider the focus of the Colorado River and the results of repetitive and concentrated movement of the water in one direction.  Marketing the same way to everyone doesn’t work well on the web.

The web is about being personal.  The web is about niches.  The web is about people, their problems, their needs.

Consider this in your internet marketing.  Are you focused?  Do you have a consistent message and do you have consistent processes for delivering that message?  Too many of us are spending all of our time researching “The Next Big Thing” and not enough time concentrating on delivering focused content through a focused delivery mechanism.

You will certainly need to be investigating new technologies and marketing methods.  If you don’t the Internet will pass you by.  But you must be disciplined enough to maintain the focused processes that are work while exploring new opportunities.

Expecting Too Much Reward For Too Little Effort

The sum total of the amount of energy expended by the Colorado River to carve a one mile deep canyon over millions of years is staggering.  Although it sounds strange to call it EFFORT, that’s exactly what it is.  It has taken an incalculable amount of energy and effort to build the great canyon.

You should expect nothing different from your efforts as a tiny business owner.  It will take effort and that effort will be rewarded.  But you will get out exactly what you put in.

The Colorado River has slowly, imperceptibly carved out a majestic canyon — the building of your tiny business will not take the colossal amount of time, effort or focus that the Colorado River has expended (PHEW!) but there are certainly lessons to be learned from the Grand Canyon and its maker.

Rebel With a Keyboard

by Russ Henneberry

rebel-with-a-causeWe are living in the most exciting time period for tiny business owners in history.  Today, you and I have the power of the press.

We have both the [free] tools and the [free]  platform to create and publish informational and entertaining content to an audience.

The Platform

I suppose the overall platform that is available to us is the Internet in general but this notion is deceiving.  The Internet has undergone a fundamental change since its popular inception in the early 90′s.

The fundamental change has been the availability of publishing tools like the one I am using to write this article — WordPress.   This has been the real game changer.  WordPress (and other blogging platforms) has given the tiny business owner a free and easy platform from which to publish content.

Learn to set up your own WordPress blog by watching these short videos.

The Tools

In my eBook, Tiny Business, Mighty Profits I teach the strategy that I (and thousands of other businesses) are using to market their small enterprises.  It is called Content Marketing and it uses the aforementioned WordPress blog as a “hub” from which to broadcast content to your target market.

The tools that are available to us to broadcast from this WordPress blog platform are many:

  • YouTube, Metacafe, DailyMotion Video Sharing Sites
  • Really Simple Syndication (RSS)
  • Email Autoresponders Like MarketVolt or AWeber
  • Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn Social Networking Sites

And the list of free “tools” for broadcasting your marketing message (your content) goes on and on.

Create your own Content Marketing plan by downloading my free eBook – Tiny Business, Mighty Profits in the upper right hand corner of my website.

You are not reliant upon anyone else to market your products and services. You are your own media house. You are your own publisher.

You are a rebel with a keyboard.

The days of promotion are waning.  We aren’t buying it any longer.

The big brands are not happy about it, but the tiny business owner is rejoicing because the (free) tools are available for us to market to the masses by becoming a PUBLISHER.

The differences between PROMOTION as marketing and PUBLISHING as marketing are many — here are two BIG ones.

A Promoter Exaggerates, A Publisher Informs

Promotion is filled with exaggerations… they are not always spoken implicitly, but they are always implied.

What Exactly Are They Implying Here?

What Exactly Are They Implying Here?

A Publisher has no need to exaggerate, they do not intend to get the attention of the prospect by being untruthful or manipulative.  Quite the contrary.  The Publisher intends to win you over with valuable, informative and truthful content.

A Promoter Repeats, A Publisher Impresses

OK! OK! Fine! I am Lovin' it!

OK! OK! Fine! I am Lovin' it!

Promotion is about relentless, interruptive repetition.   You say something over and over and over and over and over :) again until finally, it becomes BRANDED in your mind.  There is very little substance to the message — the strategy is to make a single claim and repeat it many times.

The Publisher is more interested in creating someone that will SEEK OUT your marketing message.  The Publisher wants you to subscribe to their marketing message because it is valuable and actually desired.  No need for interruption or costly ad buys to gain the repetition necessary to “drill ” a message into someones head.

Gary Vaynerchuk is a perfect example of a person with the entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for a topic and the energy to learn the tools that are available to him to become an absolute ROCK STAR in his niche.

Gary has leveraged the power of the Internet to take his fathers liquor store to a level unimaginable only 5 years ago.  Gary realizes that the New York Times and the Washington Post are not the only ones that can publish content to the masses.  We are all publishers — check that — we all have the ability to be publishers.

Gary Vaynerchuk’s Wine Library TV has built an audience through Twitter, YouTube and through his video blog.  He has used these free tools to establish himself as one of the foremost experts in the wine industry.  This has led to high-profile speaking engagements and a million dollar book deal.  The book, recently released, is called Crush It and is a blue print of the success formula Gary has used to create a wildly successful business out of his passion — wine.

The amazing thing is that 5 years ago, this success story doesn’t happen.  The free publishing tools available online today were not available to the Gary Vaynerchuk’s of the world.  More than likely, this man would be running his fathers liquor store — in obscurity.

If you aren’t familiar with the work of the Common Craft show — you need to check them out.  They do an outstanding job of explaining internet marketing trends and topics in what they refer to as “Plain English.”

In this wonderful video, the Common Craft show describes the power of social media using the ice cream business as an example — it really is fantastic and worth the 4 minutes.

"Push" marketing is a trap for the tiny business owner

"Push" marketing is a trap for the tiny business owner

I decided to count.

I have seen the Coca-Cola logo in four separate locations today.  Once on TV, once in my father-in-law’s hand, once at 7-eleven, and once on a soda machine at the airport — and it is only 3 pm.

Now that is branding.

Coca-Cola is voted year after year as one of the Top 3 most valuable brands in the world.

Wake up call:  Your tiny business is not Coca-Cola.

Some of your larger competitors may have the ability to advertise the way that Coca Cola does — putting their marketing message in front of people 10′s, 100′s, 1000′s of times per year. In advertising terms we call these experiences with a brand IMPRESSIONS.

You and your similar sized competitors may be trying to grow your business this way as well.

You will go broke.

You will find yourself spending thousands of dollars to run an advertising campaign that will achieve this many impressions on your target market.

There Is a Better Way

In my eBook, Tiny Business, Mighty Profits I unlock the secrets behind a revolutionary type of Internet Marketing called Content Marketing. At the core of this marketing strategy is creating VALUABLE CONTENT to be used as marketing material both online and off-line.

I teach tiny business owners to market the way that I do — using a WordPress business blog to BROADCAST your content to your target market.

This method of marketing is extremely effective because it uses FREE (or inexpensive) technologies on the web to market INFORMATION.

Why Content Marketing Works

I think we established above that you don’t have the marketing budget to go toe to toe with your larger competitors using traditional advertising methods.

But — you still need to get your marketing message and your business in front of your target market as many times as possible.

IMPORTANT: The key is to get your target market to actually SEEK OUT your marketing messages.

How do you do that?

Think about it — what do you SEEK online?  Answer — stuff that is valuable.

What Is Valuable?

  • Things that make me more successful
  • Things that save me time
  • Things that protect me or my loved ones
  • Things that make me more money
  • Things that entertain me

IMPORTANT: Find out what your target market needs and provide these benefits — if you do so — your target market will PULL your marketing message to them instead of you having to PAY money to PUSH your marketing message to them.

Examples of PULL marketing:

  • People asking to receive your email newsletter
  • People signing up for your RSS feed
  • People subscribing to your YouTube channel, Twitter feed or Facebook channel
  • People downloading your White Papers
  • People subscribing to your podcast or vodcast
  • People downloading your eBook

If you are going to get a limited number of IMPRESSIONS on a member of your target market — you must make that one impression so VALUABLE that they will then PULL your marketing to them on a regular basis through some of the methods above.

The real brilliance to this strategy is that once you get a member of your target market to start PULLING your marketing message to them — it costs almost nothing to market to them.  You don’t need to run another television, radio or print ad to PUSH your message to them.  They WANT it!

When I meet you or your business for the first time, I should be compelled to seek your marketing message in the future — to SUBSCRIBE to your marketing — get busy creating something so valuable that I can’t wait to see what you will say next!

linkI rarely talk about the importance of links any more –  but it is not because it has become less critical to have incoming links from other websites — links are still extremely valuable.

If you aren’t aware — incoming links to your site from quality websites will give you better rankings in the search engines.

I Have Reformed

I was an Internet marketer that purchased links from brokers and engaged in other “black hat” link building techniques to manipulate Google (and the others) search results.  I don’t do it anymore.  Not because of law or ethics (though there is some of that), but because there is no future in it.

The Threat To Google

Remember that Google (and the others) are in the business of providing reliable, trustworthy, and relevant search results for your searches.  They DO NOT want you to manipulate their search results.  They want the best websites for a particular search term to rise to the top because they have GOOD CONTENT.

Google is paying some of the brightest minds in the world to develop ways to keep their search results from being manipulated.  Paid link building is Public Enemy #1 in the battle against manipulation and they have been quite vocal about the fact that they have declared all-out war on paid links.  It is a serious threat to the future of Google and is getting ample attention within the organization.

Let Your Hub and Spokes Build Links Naturally

In my eBook, Tiny Business, Mighty Profits, I discuss the ultimate marketing strategy for a small business owner.  The book will walk you through the process of building a hub for your content by using a WordPress blog.  The book then shows you how you can broadcast your content across the web using a series of spokes that extend from your blog.

Use broadcast vehicles like:

  • Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, etc)
  • Online Video (YouTube, DailyMotion, MetaCafe, etc)
  • Email Marketing (AWeber, MarketVolt, Constant Contact, etc)
  • Podcasting
  • White Papers
  • eBooks
  • etc, etc.

Using this “hub and spokes model” will allow you to build links naturally because people will find your content and link to it.  This will present no threat to Google.  And guess what — when you are building good content and building links naturally to your website — Google will award you with traffic.

It will take time — more time than logging into a link brokers website and buying gobs of low-quality links back to your average to below average website — but in the end, you will build a resource on the Internet that your visitors will WANT to visit.

If you build something valuable on the Internet, your website will become the most profitable asset your company owns.  It will work day and night for you with little money invested.  You will build a buzz around your business that will naturally attract links — and the referrals will roll in from Google and the others.

choicesLet’s talk about something that will grow the influence of your business and exponentially increase the power of your marketing message.

Choice.

[Sarcasm] Let’s assume that your customers and prospect are using the Internet and you have decided that it would be wise to begin marketing to these people using the web.

The trouble is that we all use the Internet differently.  Some people use Facebook every day.  Some people follow their Twitter feed closely.  Some rely exclusively on email.  Myself — I use an RSS reader to aggregate everything that I am interested in into one place.

For example, there is likely a large market of people that would love to receive your message that are using Twitter.  Putting your content on Twitter will open up that market to you.

Make It Convenient

You should be placing your marketing message in as many of these places as possible — and having a WordPress blog will allow you to automate most of the dirty work.

Here are a few places that you should be putting your content because (chances are) your customers are spending time here:

YouTube – Upload your video content to YouTube and while you are at it, upload your video to lots of video sites.

Facebook – You can set your blog posts to automatically update to your Facebook page — this has brought in a couple of pieces of business for me and there are people that regularly consume my message through Facebook.

Twitter – Again, you can set it up so that your blog posts from a WordPress blog to automatically update into Twitter.  Many people follow my blog posts through Twitter.

RSS Reader – RSS comes built-in with every WordPress blog and it allows my customers and prospects to consume my content in their RSS reader.  You can see how RSS works here.

Email – You can install a form on your website using a service like AWeber that will allow your customers and prospects to receive your updates through email.

Your customers are all using the Internet differently.  You need to give them the choice to consume your marketing message wherever they please.

Make it easy and convenient for them to get your marketing message — give them a choice.

AND to make it easy on yourself, use a WordPress blog to automate the distribution of your content to these channels.

You can run but you can’t hide from online video!

– And not just in the natural search results and on YouTube — it is also starting to show itself in the paid results.

The first I heard of this was from the guys over at ReelSEO.  Their article about online video in paid search showed a screenshot of video that is making its way into the paid search results at Google.

What Are Paid Search Results?

Google makes the lions share of its money through a program called Google Adwords, it is one of the many Pay Per Click (PPC) programs available.  The results that appear at the very top and right of a search results page are paid ads and are usually denoted with the words “Sponsored Links.”

Video Pay Per Click Ads In The Wild

Google has been fiddling around with all kinds of new features in their paid ads to make for a better user experience and to make more money for their share holders.

The latest evolution of Google Adwords will change the advertising landscape dramatically.

Online video in paid ads.

Here is a screenshot of PPC video in the wild for the new Hollywood film Extract:

This feature is only available to select partners right now but it will certainly change the rules of online marketing when it is released to the greater public — and it will put the exclamation point on the end of this sentence –

You can run but you can’t hide from online video!

you-tube-logoEveryone is talking about social media, video and search engine optimization.  If you want a piece of any of these three hot trends — YouTube should be part of your solution.

YouTube has become an integral part of marketing on the Internet because it is a social media channel, a search engine and a video sharing site — all rolled into one.

YouTube as Social Media

The Journal of Computer Mediated Communications at Indiana University defines social networking sites as:

“…web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. “

YouTube does all the above… allowing its users to build profiles, share video content and add commentary on other people’s video.  It is a dynamic website where your business can build a following that is ready to consume your marketing message.

YouTube as a Search Engine

Firstly, Google owns YouTube.  Nuff said.  Well… maybe it’s not nuff.  :)   When you are doing searches today in Google, you will notice that there is now video being displayed in the search results.  Adding video to YouTube is another way to get search engine traffic to your micro businesses website.

you-tube-search-result

Secondly, YouTube itself is a search engine.  Search queries typed into YouTube total over 2 billion per month.  This 2 billion puts YouTube in the same league with the search market share of Yahoo and Bing, some have even said that YouTube is the #2 search engine in America.

YouTube as a Video Sharing Site

The social networking and search engine aspects of YouTube coupled with the fact that it is a video sharing site is what makes YouTube such a marketing powerhouse.

Video is hot.

Over 14 billion videos were viewed on the Internet in December of 2008 with the lion’s share of that going to YouTube… nearly 40%.

As a tiny business owner looking to market your business on the Internet… YouTube deserves some attention.
