Once a Day And Your Business Will Grow — Scouts Honor

by Russ Henneberry

old-lady-cross-streetWhen is the last time you did something during business hours that benefited you or your business in NO way?

Of course we can debate the fact that NO ONE ever does anything that doesn’t give them some benefit.  Perhaps you believe that (at its core) all actions have some motive behind them.

People donate to charities for the recognition.  They help the elderly across the street because it gives them some pleasure, etc.

I like to believe that there are actions taken by people purely out of the goodness of one’s heart.  The Boy Scouts call it chivalry and it is still very much a part of their teaching.

The Power of The Good Deed

Regardless of your feelings about human nature let me challenge you to make a commitment on a daily basis.  A commitment that WILL BENEFIT your tiny business.

Look for a way that you can provide VALUE to some other person or some other business and take some ACTION each day that benefits someone else.

Watch your business grow.  Watch your network grow.  Watch your referrals grow.

7 Good Deeds You Can Perform Today

  • Connect two business people that would benefit from a relationship
  • Retweet someone’s content on Twitter
  • Give a referral to someone that has a good product or service
  • Create a piece of content that personally addresses someone’s problem and refer them to it
  • Perform a small service for someone in need — FOR FREE
  • Attend someone’s networking event or speaking engagement, then write about it
  • Offer your expertise to a group of people in the form of a white paper or speech

This is by no means an exhaustive list — What are you doing that has no (immediate) reward for your business?

I referred one of my partners to a client that needs a form
fixed on his website this morning. It should be a simple job.
Yesterday I talked about Social Media Marketing to a network group
I work with and had a good question and answer discussion afterwards.
In my humble opinion it seems to me that these are the things that
matter and keep your business growing.
Expanding your sphere of influence by networking in areas that
complement what you do is a great idea also.

That’s great Matt! And speaking to a group is not only helpful to them but certainly to you as well.

Russ,
Your posts are always relevant and well thought out. Peggy Nehmen sent me a blog post by Chris Brogan on blogging every day. I’m awed by those of you who do and always have something to say. I do like the message in this one. Thanks.

Hi Bobbi! Thanks for the comment . I don’t post every day — but every weekday. It helps to have a content strategy. For instance, I know that every Friday I will be posting some kind of video post and commenting about the content of that video. Sometimes the video is of me but most of the time it is just something that I find on YouTube that is very relevant to my audience.
