How and Why To Dominate The Search Engine Results For Your Own Name

by Russ Henneberry

nametagAs a micro business owner – you are the face of your organization. This means that your reputation drives the reputation of the entire business.

When prospects are considering doing business with you they will likely do what has become known as — “Google You.”  This means they will type your name into Google and comb through what they find.  Then they will judge you.  :)

No doubt you want to have lots of good results for your prospects to sift through and nothing negative.  If someone reviews you or your company in a negative light and it is showing high in the search engine results — you will lose business.

The best way to combat this situation is to work on it BEFORE it becomes a problem.  A couple of hours of work on the couch with your lap top will do it.

The basic idea here is that you are going to build fairly detailed profiles on very powerful websites.  This will mean your name and your information will be “housed” on domains that rank very well in the search engines.

Build a profile on the following websites:

Linked-In — The well-known resume and career networking site.

Twitter –  The micro blogging site.  You don’t necessarily need to start “tweeting” all day long — just build a profile and put out a few messages.

MetaCafe –  This is a video sharing site very similar to YouTube.  Build a profile here and spend a few minutes filling in the details.

MeetUp –  MeetUp is a website that is geared toward off-line networking.

Amazon –  That’s right.  The big book seller has the ability to build profiles and they rank very well.

DailyMotion –  This is a video sharing site much like YouTube.

Digg –  Digg is the popular content sharing platform.

Netvibes — This is an RSS reader.  There are many benefits to having an RSS reader one of which is the profile will rank well in Google.   You can watch a tutorial on setting up your RSS reader here.

Blip.tv — Blip is another video sharing website.

Here are some EXTRA CREDIT activities for you –

Blog Commenting — Pick 3 or 4 powerful blogs in your niche and make comments on these blogs a couple of times a week using your name in the Name field.  There are many benefits to doing this, one of which is dominating the search results for your name.

Owning yourname.com — If you haven’t already purchased www.yourname.com — you should do this now.  Try purchasing it both with the hyphen and without the hyphen.  For example, If your name is Rose Harper, you should check both www.roseharper.com and www.rose-harper.com.

Owning your name in the Google search results will go a long way in controlling the reputation of your tiny business.  So grab your lap top, pop on your favorite movie, and build some profiles.

These are just a few of the places that you could build a profile to ensure domination of the search results for your name — if you have other ideas please leave them in the comments.
