The Importance Of Long Tail Keywords

by Russ Henneberry

I’m a cheap skate — I like the free traffic that I can get from Google, Yahoo and Bing rather than paying for it with a Pay Per Click campaign. But, as you can imagine, getting free traffic in the industry that I am in is very difficult. I am up against other internet marketers that want the same main keywords I want.

I would love to rank #1 in Google for ‘internet marketing’ -OR- ‘online marketing.’

Reality check — it’s not going to happen. But that’s ok.

I get my traffic by creating lots of great content (AKA Blogging) that brings in visitors on the strangest keywords. Many times they are 3, 4, and 5 word phrases that probably won’t be searched again until next Christmas.

This is called the “long tail” of search. Watch this video entitled Ignore the Long Tail at Your Own Peril! from the guys (and gals) over at SEOmoz.

Great stuff, Russ!

I’ve heard you mention this before, and it really makes a lot of sense.

Thanks!
