Let’s Have A Conversation! As Long As It Is About Me

by Russ Henneberry

How To Win Friends and Influence PeopleDon’t let this be your mantra online!  There is no money in it.

Remember that the rules of human behavior have not changed just because we are now on the Internet.  The rules (if anything) have become magnified by the enormous amount of communication on the Internet every day.

Consider Dale Carnegie’s classic business bible — How To Win Friends and Influence People– a book that every business owner should read, and read again if it has been a while.

Carnegie devotes 4 “rules” in the “How To Make People Like You” section of his book to this subject with the following being some of the major points:

  • “Remember that a man’s Name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”
  • “Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.”
  • “Talk in the terms of the other man’s interest.”
  • “Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.”

~Dale Carnegie, How To Win Friends and Influence People

People love to tell you about their family, business, views and passions.  LET THEM!

People are absolutely dying to tell you about themselves on sites like Twitter and Facebook because there is so much TALKING and not enough LISTENING.  In fact, I have determined that there are several people I am watching on Social Media sites that NEVER listen.  This is a tragedy for their business.

It has never been so easy to have these kinds of conversations using Twitter and Facebook.  Ask people questions — WIN FRIENDS and WIN MORE SALES.

What are your thoughts on this?  How do you get others to open up and talk about themselves using the Internet?

Russ,

This is a great post. The topics discussed are also true facts that if only the World applied it would perfect business relations and business in itself. Social Media is a great way to create content that engages with your audience but also applies to real Life examples of others.

Thank You!

The ideas laid out in How To Win Friends and Influence People are very simple, yet they are certainly easier said than done. You really have to commit yourself to these principles to see the pay off.
