The Steve Miller Band Would Have Trouble Conducting Marketing Training Too

by Russ Henneberry

Marketing TrainingHere is the problem with marketing training in groups —-

We’ve all been there.

9 out of 10 marketing training books, seminars, courses, videos, etc are either too philosophical or too tactical.

If the marketing training gets too specific (tactical) — most people are going to say:

“This doesn’t apply to me at all!  I already knew that!”

-OR-

“This is way over my head!  I need you to back up about 20 steps!”

And on the other end of the spectrum there are the marketing training books, courses, videos, etc that are too high level.

They are too philosophical and there is no real “Nuts and Bolts” to apply to your business.

Most of these types of marketing training courses are going to address the problems that you are having and then present you with a solution that is very abstract and non-practical.

The Steve Miller band in the song Fly Like An Eagle seems to have a “solution” to hunger, homelessness and poverty but in the end, he is just waxing poetic and there is no real practical advice for us to follow.

Feed the babies
Who don’t have enough to eat
Shoe the children
With no shoes on their feet
House the people
Livin’ in the street
Oh, oh, there’s a solution

I want to fly like an eagle
To the sea
Fly like an eagle
Let my spirit carry me
I want to fly like an eagle
Till I’m free
Fly through the revolution

Thanks a lot Stevie — you want to fly like an eagle?  How does that help us?  :)

These Are Big Problems

Hunger, homelessness and poverty are not easy problems to solve in the space of a song.

And —— learning to create real marketing momentum is difficult to teach in the space of a single training course, book, etc.

As a result, trainings that are very tactical will tend to gloss over or outright omit the basic steps that much of their audience may not yet have mastery over.   Philosophical trainings will usually become ever more abstract as the difficulty of solving the problem increases.

Everyone Is Different

When you are receiving marketing training, you will be different from everyone else in the audience:

  • Different industries
  • Different target markets
  • Different skill sets
  • Different experiences
  • Different attitudes

This means that if the training materials are absolutely perfect for you, they will fall short for everyone else in the group.

Most of the time, of course, you will spend 60 minutes reading a book or listening to a seminar and take 1 or 2 good nuggets of information out of that time spent.  Sheesh — not very efficient, is it?

I would love to have your thoughts…

What do you prefer?  Tactical?  Philosophical?  How can this problem of training to large groups be solved?  What is the best Steve Miller band song?  :)

Hey Russ,
You sure nailed this one. Everyone learns differently so delivery style that is good for one person will not be as beneficial to someone else. The important thing to remember is that the training should be delivered to the best of your ability and only after well thought out preparations have been created. Training will benefit the individual only as much as the recipient desires to receive. “Some folks have eyes and do not see, ears and do not hear” So “when the student is ready the teacher shows up” As the trainer, your job is to prepare and deliver(period)…and leave the homelessness, hunger, and the poverty to Steve Miller! :)

@Jennifer — preparation is definitely key. Thinking about the audience that you will be speaking to and crafting your training or presentation around that audience is important. It is easy as a presenter and trainer to just keep doing the same presentations and trainings over and over with no adjustment.

Russ,

I’ve been pondering these same perplexing questions for quite some time.

Success in life and business is a balance of healthy philosophical tenets and practical skills (tactics).

If I could just teach, communicate, find the balance…

No question Mike — you have to have both. I think teaching to groups is just difficult — you can’t please everyone.
