A Long Way From Where You Parked The Car

by Russ Henneberry

A Long WayWhen you set out to do something as large as building a tiny business, you are going to travel a long way from the car.

You pull up to the trailhead and you get out your map.  You want to be damn sure that before you walk out on that trail —- you know exactly where you are going.

After a long and arduous trek  —- you realize that in order to win, you must leave the trail.  You will have to make your own way.  You have used many different resources to get you this far, but now it is time to BECOME the resource.

It’s time to put the map down and guide yourself using your gut.  Your instincts.

Walk in the direction that seems right to you. Create your own experience.  One that jives with your values and brings balance to your life.

Know that there is no resource, no map that can get you exactly where you want to go.

Don’t compromise.  Decide what you want, and pay the price to get there.

If you do so, you’ve already won.

Nicely put. You do pay a price for starting your own business. There are sacrifices that you’ll need to make along the way which may or may not help expand your business. You’ll never know if you don’t try and if you don’t fail then you won’t learn. Failure isn’t what anybody wants although sometimes you just need to take that risk.

Good post!

P.S. Bring back the marketing stuff, you know, THAT stuff :)

You’ve been an inspiration since day one Russ. One of the things I love about marketing in general is meeting like-minded individuals that share the same passion and vision that I do. This particular post was a great reminder of the ups and downs you face as an entrepreneur and business owner.

@Ivan — This is why I love the web Ivan — it allows us to connect every day if we want to — it doesn’t replace real face to face interactions with people but it certainly enhances those interactions.

This is a great analogy. Sometimes the trail is clearly laid out before you, and other times you have to create your own. Sometimes you have a trail guide or hiking companions, but other times you’re out there on your own to deal with the spooks and the R.O.U.S.’s (for the Princess Bride fans)
