Twitter Cheat SheetUse this Twitter Cheat Sheet when you are getting started with Twitter.

The @ Symbol

@Russhenneberry = sends a message out to the public twitter stream that is directed at me and is available in my “@russhenneberry Inbox”

Example Tweets:

@RussHenneberry – are you interested in doing a wordpress training next Tuesday?

-or-

It was great to see all of you last night at the networking event — @julielwelch @russhenneberry @TheNetImpact

The # Symbol

#OilSpill – A Hashtag Indicates the subject matter of the tweet and will be included in that Hashtag’s Stream.

Example Tweets:

How many people feel that BP is doing everything they can to stop the flow of oil? #oilspill

-or-

Could you guys play the 3rd through 5th innings again? — I was at the concession stand – #stlcards #stl #fail

How To Find the Right People to Follow on Twitter

1. Find a Twitter account that your market follows — if you are trying to sell services to dentists — start following those that follow the American Dental Association

2. Google For Lists – if you are trying to sell services to self published authors — try googling something like “twitter lists self published authors”

3. Monitor hash tags – if you are a chiropractor and are looking for local clients – try monitoring the #stl hashtag.

4. find the “movers and shakers” and watch who they are conversing with – follow these people.

5.  Use Twitter Search to find people that are tweeting keywords that are important to your industry.

How to Get Someone’s Attention Using Twitter

1. Promote their business, content, event, etc and use the @ symbol to ensure that they are aware of your tweet

Example Tweet: Check out @russhenneberry and his tiny business, mighty profits meetup here http://bitly.com/aeiou

2. Retweet what they are tweeting

Example Tweet: RT @russhenneberry – Come check out my Tiny Business, Mighty Profits here http://bitly.com/aeiou

3.  Tweet good stuff, not automated junk

Overall Twitter Tips

  1. Don’t talk only about yourself, talk about and to others
  2. Don’t do social, be social
  3. Don’t automate your whole Twitter stream
  4. Point people to good stuff using links
  5. Set up a goal in your Google Analytics for measurement
