Will You Tube’s Pay-Per-Download Model Work?

by Russ Henneberry

With projected losses totaling in the $500 million range, Google has decided that it must be more aggressive in monetizing its tremendously popular You Tube property.

Starting this month, You Tube has begun offering its Pay Per View model to selected partners.  Most pay-per-download videos come with a $1 price tag.

Although You Tube will bring in an estimated $240 million dollars and grow by 20%, it won’t be able to offset the projected $710 million dollars in operating costs.

This new feature will allow You Tube users to download You Tube videos and play them offline.  This will allow large studios like Disney and Warner to monetize their content on the giant video site that has been plagued by digital rights lawsuits in the past.

If this new business model is succesful,  You Tube uploaders will have a way to monetize the content that they are creating and You Tube users will have another way to spend their money online. :)

This is a pretty old post Ryan. I’m not sure if YouTube (Google) continued this program.
