Your Content Could End Up Anywhere. Let It.

quitstealingourlettersAre you afraid that people are stealing the content on your website? Or broadcasting it all over the web for others to see?

What are you afraid of? Let it happen.

It doesn’t matter if your content is being consumed on your website or somewhere else, the point is that it is being consumed and your reaping the benefits.

There are a few things that you can do to make sure you are getting maximum exposure for your content and getting credit for it — even when it is stolen.

Here are some tips:

  • When you are writing a blog post, link to other blog posts on your own blog or your home page. If your content is stolen, you will most likely get a link out of the deal.
  • Use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology to let others view your content in their RSS readers.
  • When uploading video to a video sharing site be sure to include a link to your website in the description and mention your website in the video at the beginning and end.
  • If you notice that someone is completely ripping off your content and claiming it for their own, send them an email and let them know you are on to them.  This is usually enough.   You can use a tool like Copyscape to see if this is happening.

The Internet is a lawless wasteland (too over the top?) where content is stolen, borrowed, reworked and shared.

Stay focused on creating good, unique content for your target market and, in the end, you will rule the day.
